From Lukla airport of Solukhumbu, trekker reach Setopokhari valley (around 3,700 m. and which is also
the origin place of Saptakoshi the greatest river in Nepal) through Kothe, Naulekh and Merala pass
(5,415). There are following four alternatives for trekkers to reach this Setopokhari valley:-
  1. From Lukla through Namche, Tengboche and Mingbola pass (5,817 m.),
  2. From Lukla through Namche, Chhukung and Amphulapcha pass (5,800 m.),
  3. From Tumlingtar through Makalu base camp and Sherpenicol pass (6,135 m.) and
  4. From Tumlingtar through Tamku, Kenpa and Gaubitta pass (around 3,900 m.).
It is compulsory to pass at least one from aforementioned five peaks Merala, Mingbola, Amphulapcha,Sherpenicol and Gaubitta to come back for the trekkers. In the case of unfortunate snowing, many trekkers cannot cross the mountains and have been being rescued by the helicopter. But most of the porters have to face big problems and sometime they die there. However, trekkers go there in every season to submit Mt. Barunje, Mera, Chamlang, Makalu and many more. In the trekking season the valley becomes like a recognized town.
In this situation, it is extremely needed to develop new trekking way through the bank of Hunga River (branch of Saptakoshi), which never passes any peaks. If it is developed a new trekking way to reach   Muddikhadka of Chheskam from Setopokhari, trekkers can back Phaplu through Chheskam, Bung, Sotang, Pawai, Deusa, Mukli, Garma and Salleri, which also will be a rescue way for the trekkers. They also can back Tumlingtar through Chheskam, Gudel, Bhojpur Dobane or Khotang Lamidada airport through Salpa pass, Dharmapeak, Aiselukharka of Khotang. The name of this trail may be the Phaplu Setopokhari trekking trail and Lamidada Setopokhari trail as well. It was a preliminary survey by local peoples of Chheskam, however it is the first time that District Technical Office jointly with Chheskam
Village Development Fund on behalf of Nepal government has planned to perform survey work of this
 Phaplu Setopokhari trail.
We local youths in Kathmandu shared this government plan and possibilities of that two trekking trails with
the team of Yatra (Travel) program in Avenues national television, which is relating to promotion of virgins tourism in Nepal. Then they interested and proposed to go there with the integration of that government team. We tentatively calculate the budget and it was nearly Rs. one million. However we decided to go anyhow and we became success because of financial assistances of different trekking companies, organizations and persons. We became success to make video documentary of phaplu Setipokhari and Lamidada Setopokhari trekking trail within 36 days. This Program report is for acknowledgement to these who contributed this program and to recommend to the concerned governmental and nongovernmental organizations to develop these trekking trails.

 Background
Solukhumbu Nepal is known as a tourism destination due to Mt. Everest, cultural diversity, wild life, flora and fauna in Sagarmatha National Park and Makalu Barun National Park. However the southern part of Solukhumbu has been over shadowed mainly due to the lack of infrastructure development, dissemination, lodges and hotels etc. However there is the possibility of tourism development, if it an effective development strategy is implemented. Also the other reason not to develop in southern part of Solukhumbu is the trekking trails of lower Solukhumbu have not been linked with upper recognized trails. Although there are enough possibilities of new trekking trails development.

Possibilities of new trekking trails in southern part of Solukhumbu
 A. Phaplu Setopokhari tourism trails
From Lukla airport of Solukhumbu, trekker reach Setopokhari valley (around 3,700 m. and  which is also the origin place of Saptakoshi the greatest river in Nepal) through Kothe, Naulekh and Merala pass (5,415).There are also following four alternatives for trekkers to reach in this Setopokhari valley:-
a.      From Lukla through Namche, Tengboche and Mingbola pass (5,817 m.),
b.      From Lukla through Namche, Chhukung and Amphulapcha pass (5,800 m.),
c.      From Tumlingtar through Makalu basecamp and Sherpenicol pass (6,135 m.) and
d.      From Tumlingtar through Tamku, Kenpa and Gaubitta pass (around 3,900 m.).
It is compulsory to pass at least one from aforementioned five peaks Merala, Mingbola, Amphulapcha, Sherpenicol and Gaubitta to come back for the trekkers. In the case of unfortunate snowing, many trekkers who cannot cross aforementioned peaks have been being rescued by the helicopter. But most of the porters have to face big problems and sometime they die there. However, trekkers go there in every season to submit Mt. Barunje, Mera, Chamlang, Makalu and many more. In the trekking season the valley becomes like a recognized town. In this situation, it is extremely needed to develop a new trekking way through the bank of Hunga River (branch of Saptakoshi), which never passes any peaks. If it is developed a new trekking way to reach Muddikhadka of Chheskam from Setopokhari valley, trekkers can reach Phaplu through Chheskam, Bung, Sotang, Pawai, Deusa, Mukli, Garma and Salleri. They also can go Tumlingtar through Chheskam, Gudel, Bhojpur Dobane or Khotang Lamidada airport through Salpa pass, Dharmapeak, Aiselukharka of Khotang. Tosh Seel Annex 1
In normal sense a culture worshiping of nature (lands) in Kulung community is called Tosh. The major theme of Tosh is to thank to nature (God in Kirati religion) for providing foods and to pray again to provide foods to all the animals of earth. The history of Tosh is interested.
Before 22 generation (Kulung genealogy published by Kulung Association),Dhanamukha a powerful ancestor of Kulung used to live there in Chhemsing village under Mahakulung. He was really powerful. He used to bring whole big tree without making piece. He used to eat 12 times more than normal person. Once in a spring season there was food scarcity, because of drought. Kulung peoples became worried to live.
One day Dhanamukh collect many bulls of village, choose the most powerful one and killed by beating. The bull shouted. That evening it was big rainfall there. What was the actual scientific relation of two events killing bull and rainfall. But peoples believed that it was because of sound of bull, god got message of peoples of earth and sent water. Anyway all the peoples became very happy on rainy. Then they celebrate party together by eating the meat of bull with all their foods stored to save their life. And they expressed their thankful to the nature and again prayed for further more foods. They danced like some plants moving by wind. They celebrated this occasion at least 4 days. The first start day is called Telsam and the place to organize Telsam is called Denam. The last day or forth day celebration is called Tosh. The original Denam, where Dhanamukh killed the bull is lies in Chheskam 3, Chhemsi of Solukhumbu.
Since this event Kulung community had been celebrating this festival by killing bull per year. But when Nepal was declared Hindu country legally. Kulung community was not allowed to celebrate their culture by killing bull. Then they started to celebrate by mixing some part of meat of death cow in collected food from community and kept continue to save their theme of culture. Now they use to dance at least twice per year in Kulung community as well as in Kirati community by worshiping for more food and thanking to provide now. The dance is likely the moving style of crops by wind. This kind of cultural dance is called Tosh Seel . Chamling peoples say Sakela seel, Bantawa say Sakewa seel. The common name of this dance is Chandi nach (Chandi dance). But Chandi is not a language of Kirati indigenous. So they want to recognize their own culture in their own language.

                                                             Pomlalung : Annex 2
In the age of hunting one of the Kulung ancester Ratapkhu had gone to Pomlalung area above the Gudel village in Mahakulung for hunting with his son. They found very big cave there and they lived there during their hunting. This cave is called Pomlalung in Kulung language. Unfortunately one night the son of Ratapkhu died there. Ratapkhu became very sad. He wanted to bring that death body of his son but it was not possible to bring alone himself. Then he told to his son's death body that he could send all spirits of Kulung there. So his son gets more friends there in that slitary jungle. Then Ratapkhu buried his son's death body there. Since this event Kulung community have been sending their spirite of  death bodies there. It is therefore Pomlalung is one of the most importaint place of Kulung indigenous peoples.

Kenpa Gaubitta Kalpokhari ( Death lake): Annex 3
Around in the sixteenth century A Gurung people with more than 1000 sheeps had come in this Kenpa area. Gurung wanted to cook some foods. He used 3 stones as kitchen milestone. When he cooked some foods like milk and such kind of foods, it didn't create any problems. But when he cooked some meats or such kinds of food the milestone brokken and spelled all his food. This event repitted more than 5 times and finnaly he becaome very angry and he cut that stone. As result there was very big stromming and all his sheps died there. He forcasted that the stone should be god and he kept it separately and made a temple there. When a local Kulung Ancestor namely Thimra listen that event he decided to go there for worshiping. He went to there with his other more team members on the occassion of Janai Purnima ( special date according to Nepali callender and it is in the month of Auguest). When he reached there he said to his assistants and he promised to go inside the lake and bring a buffelo. But it was a term for his assistants that they had to play his drome very loughly. But when he brough a buffelo as he said his assistants affried and they went away. Then the buffelo backed him inside the lake. It indicated some blood in that lake. The Thimra person never returned. Since this day it started to be recognized as a death lake. now days also tourists can see that cut sore of god at the temple and that lake at Gaubitta. Since that event many peoples from Bhojpur, Solukhumbu, Sangkhuwasava have been worshiping in this place on the accasion of Janai Purnima.

Phaplu- Setopokari trekking Trail for 'The Great Himalayan Trail'

The concept of about 4,500 k.m long and adventure Himalayan journey from Myanmar to Tibet through the high ranges of Asian Himalayan countries Pakistan, India, Bhutan and Nepal is called 'The Great Himalayan Trail'. It has been mentioned in its' planning documents that there will be upper and lower 'Great Himalayan Trail' in which upper for mountain trekking and lower for cultural, ecotourism, wildlife and jungle safari to support local peoples, who are facing directly the problems of climate change and poverty. It may be the longest, most adventure and wonderful trail, which covers all 14 mountains higher than 8,000 m. in the world. The proposed trail starts from Myanmar to end at Barwa of Tibet through the mountain ranges of Arunanchal province of India, Bhutan, Sikkim, Darjeeling and Nepal as well. In the case of Nepal it is expected to take 150 days to complete trekking in this trail and the total length will be around of 1,700 k.m. Kanchanjangga region is the enter point of this trail in Nepal which directly follows through Makalu base camp, Sherpenicol pass (6,235 m.), Amphulapcha pass (5,800 m.), Namchhe, Thame, Tashi Lapcha pass (5,755m), Annapurna region and ends at Darchula district. In the case of Solukhumbu District, after Sherpenicol pass, Setopokhari valley is the enter point and Thame is the ending point of this trail. The major two objectives of this trail are to integrate and promote the Himalayan ranges trekking in Asia and to support to the local peoples of Himalayan range by ecotourism management.

The concept in the first time was developed jointly by an international non governmental organization 'The Mountain Institute' and local trekkers of these regions. Now in collaboration with Trekking Agent Association of Nepal and Nepal Tourism Board, the ministry of tourism of Nepal as a leader organization is implementing a project of this concept namely ' The Great Himalayan Trail Program' funded by SNV and UKaid. The major targeted areas of this project are Humla, Gorkha, Dolpa and Solukhumbu districts. There are also some local partner organizations for this program implementation.

Phaplu- Setopokhari Tourism Trail

From Lukla airport of Solukhumbu, trekker reach Setopokhari valley (around 3,700 m. and which is also the origin place of Saptakoshi the greatest river in Nepal) through Kothe, Naulekh and Merala pass (5,415). After the concept developed of 'The Great Himalayan Trail' this valley is not only the Setopokhari, but also the enter point of the great Himalayan trail in Solukhumbu district. Because the proposed great Himalayan trails enters in this valley through Sherpenicol pass. There are following four alternatives for trekkers to reach in this Setopokhari valley:-

  1. From Lukla through Namche, Tengboche and Mingbola pass (5,817 m.),
  2. From Lukla through Namche, Chhukung and Amphulapcha pass (5,800 m.),
  3. From Tumlingtar through Makalu basecamp and Sherpenicol pass (6,135 m.) and

In the case of unfortunate snowing, many trekkers have been being rescued by the helicopter. But most of the porters have to face big problems and sometime they die there. However, trekkers go there in every season to submit Mt. Barunje, Mera, Chamlang, Makalu and many more. In the trekking season the valley becomes like a recognized town.

In this situation, it is extremely needed to develop new trekking way through the side of Hunga River (branch of Saptakoshi), which never passes any peaks. If it is developed a new trekking way to reach Muddikhadka of Chheskam from Setopokhari, trekkers can reach Phaplu through Chheskam, Bung, Sotang, Pawai, Deusa, Mukli, Garma and Salleri. They also can go Tumlingtar through Chheskam, Gudel, Bhojpur Dobane or Khotang Lamidada airport through Salpa pass, Dharmapeak, Aiselukharka of Khotang. The name of this trail may be the Phaplu Setopokhari trekking trail. A team of technicians from District Technical Office Salleri and AV news national television have completed their survey work with finding its' possibility in the future.

Need of Phaplu-Setopokhari trekking trail:

After the development of this trail, trekkers who reach there from Lukla and Tumlingtar through Mingbola pass, Merala pass, Amphulapcha pass, Sherpenicol pass and Gubitta pass can easily back through this way to reach Phaplu, Lamidada and Tumlingtar. It creates ecotourism for lower Solukhumbu and local peoples of Khotang, Bhojpur and Sangkhuwasava districts. What are more trekkers, who can not cross these peaks easily, can come through this trail. So in case of snowing, it will be the rescue way for the trekkers. Trekkers can go Everest region if they cross Amphulapchha and can reach Lukla for Kathmandu. In this situation, it will be the round trekking of both cultural and mountaineering in the same time.

But if it is ignored or made delay to develop this trail, trekkers who arrive in Setopokhari valley from Myanmar through the 'Great Himalayan Trail' have to face big problems in this valley specially in the time of snowing. In this situation the Setopokhari Valley will be the Problem Valley for the Great Himalayan Trail. It is therefore the future of The Great Himalayan Trail depends on the Phaplu Setopokhari valley for Makalu Barun National park region. Mainly local peoples from Chheskam are trying to develop this trail by small fund allocated from VDC fund. Other stakeholders of The Great Himalayan Trail are also requested to collaborate with local peoples for this mission.

Bagaman Kulung
kulung_4@hotmail.com
The technical team of District Technical Office Solukhumbu, Nepal has completed the survey work of new trekking trail to Mt. Everest from Phaplu through (lower Solukhumbu) Salleri, Deusa, Sotang, Chheskam Muddikharka, Setipokhari valley, Amphulapcha pass, Dhingboche with finding possibility of it's in future. Man Singh Kulung a technical person of District Technical Office Salleri said that there is possibility to develop new trekking way which will be mainly a rescue way for the trekkers who enters in Seto pokhari valley through either Mera La pass (5415 m.), Mingbola pass (5817 m.) Amphulachha pass (5800 m.) or Sherpeni cole pass (6135m.). Trekkers have to reach compulsory in this valley to climb Mt. Barunche, Mt. Makalu (8463 m./5th highest in the world), Mera, Chamlang, Charpate and others more than of 20 mountains. From this valley trekkers have to cross at least one pass of four aforementioned cross to come back. It is therefore, trekkers have to reserve helicopter for rescue if it starts rainy with snowing in this valley and they will not be able to cross. Otherwise there is not possibility to live. The central idea of this trekking trail development is to develop new trekking trail which directly follow the Hungu River to reach either Lamidada airport Khotang or Phaplu airport Solukhumbu or Tumlingtar airport Sngkhuwasabha. In this situation this trail will be a rescue way for trekkers and bridge of economic development for local peoples by selling local organic foods. In the same time trekkers get both mountaineering and cultural trekking after construction of this trail. They will reach Mt. Everest (8848m.) and Mt. Makalu (8463 m.), Mt. Barunche (7129 m) and many more through this way. Due to the lack of budget the construction work to develop this trail is being late.

New possibility for trekking in Solukhumbu

Baga Man Kulung

Chheskam 3 Solukhumbu

Concept Paper

On the topic of tourism development in the Southern part of Solukhumbu Nepal.

Backgrou

Solukhumbu Nepal is known as a tourism destination due to Mt. Everest, cultural diversity, wild life, flora and fauna in Sagarmatha National Park and Makalu Barun National Park. However the southern part of Solukhumbu has been over shadowed mainly due to the lack of infrastructure development, dissemination, lodges and hotels etc. There is the possibility of tourism development, if it an effective development strategy is implemented. In this short paper a concept related to tourism development, including Bung, Chheskam and Gudel of Solukhumbu, has been presented

1. Major recognized tourism trails in Solukhu

Lukla airport is known as a major tourism door for Solukhumbu. From Lukla airport to Everest base camp through Phakding,to Namche and Namche to Rolwaling valley through Thame, there are well recognized tourism trails in Solukhumbu. Also Lukla to Makalu base camp through Naulekh, Mera base camp, and Serpeni col cross is a well known tourism trail in Solukhumbu. From Makalu base camp there is a way to reach Tumlingtar airport through Hatiya of Sangkhuwasava. Round trekking from Namche to Lukla through Pangboche, Chhikung, Aamalapchho cross, Seti pokhari, Mera base camp, Naulekh and Namche to Lukla through Tengboche, Mingmala, Mera peak are also other recognized tourism trails of Solukhumbu. Trekking trails in the southern part of Solukhumbu are not linked with those eatablished ways mentioned above. This a major reason why southern part of trekking trail has been over shadowed.

2. Possibility of new trekking trail:

2.1 Phaplu to Mera peak trail : After seven days trekking from Lukla through Naulekh, Mera base camp trekkers reach Setipokhari valley. This valley is also known as the origin of Dhudkoshi river which is the biggest river in Nepal. Trekkers have many alternatives to reach the Setipokhari valley from Lukla. These are i) Through Namche, Chhikung, Aamalapchho pass, ii) Through Namche, Tengboche, Mingmala pass, iii) Through Naulekha, Mera Langur iv) From Tumlingtar through Seduwa, Makalu base camp, Serpenicol pass. The above mentioned four alternatives are major trails to reach Setipokhari valley. From these valleys trekkers, who want to return have to pass at least one peak among Serpenicol, Aamalapchho, Mera Langur and Mingmala pass (around 5500 meters on average). In the case of unfortunate snow many trekkers are rescued by helicopter. Sometimes porters die there. Due to the risks trekkers in this area are given double remuneration than other area. Even with these problems every season many trekkers go trekking through this valley. In the trekking season this valley becomes like a recognized town.

There is a possibility to develop a new trekking way from Phaplu to Setipokhari valley through Mukli, Deusa, Sotang, Bung, Chheskam, and Muddi. Since 2008 after studying this possibility the District Development Committee Solukhumbu has been developing a new tourism way. However that has not been put into effect due to lack the of funds. If a nearly 45 km. trekking route from Muddi Chheskam to Setipokhari valley is developed, Chheskam, Bung, Sotang, Gudel, Pawai, Deusa, Mukli, Necha and Garma will be positively effected with the linkage of road transportation.

2.1.1 Need of Phaplu Mera trail

After the development of this trail, trekkers reaching the Setipokhari valley from Lukla and Tumlingtar through Mingmala pass, Aamalapchho pass, Serpenicol pass and Mera Langgur can use an alternative way to reach either Phaplu, Kanggel dada, Lamidada or Tumlingtar airport to return to Kathmandu. At the same time there will be increased economic growth in the lower level of Solukhumbu. Simultaneously trekkers, who can't pass the peaks can use this way as a rescue way to return to Kathmandu, because this way they do not have to go over any peaks. Therefore this way can also become known as a rescue way for mountaineers. If the trekkers go this way and pass Aamalapchho they can easily reach Mt. Everest and return to Lukla through Dhudkoshi valley. This round trip will have cultural diversity and mountaineering at the same time. It will be known as second gate to reach Mt. Everest.

2.1.2 Opportunity to develop this trail

The Nepal government established a mountaineering Academy Nepal at Garma Solukhumbu in 2000. In the national plan B.S 2063- 2066 there is mentioned the development of an international mountaineering center there. At the same time District Development Committee of Solukhumbu has planned and is now implementing road construction to reach Garma. So tourists who reach Gama can take this proposed trail to reach Mt. Everest through Aamalpchho pass. In this situation they can enjoy cultural diversity and mountaineering at the same time.

2.2 Lamidada Setipokhari trekking trail

Lamidada Khotang to Solukhumbu Phaplu and Kangeldada airport through Salpa pass, Gudel, Bung, Sotang, Deusa is already a normal way for trekking. This way is more suitable for village base tourism than mountaineering. It is possible to develop a new trekking way from Salpa Pokhari mid point of Sangkhuwasava, Solukhumbu and Bhojpur to Setipokhari through Bhakari Chhiruwa, Kongkho, Bhukur Dada, Bhaisiri, Mekato, Kenpa as a new mountaineering trekking trail. The main feature of this concept is to organize trekking through the hillsides from 2700 m. to 4200 m. By using this new trail trekkers can enjoy with mountains views and many pilgrim places like Gaubitta and Salpa.

2.2.1 Major attraction part of Lamidada Setipokhari trekking trail.

From Siluchho peak 4156 m. which is a mid point of Sangkhuwasava, Solukhumbu and Bojpur you can see more than 22 peaks and mountains including Everest, Makalu, Nupse, Dhudkunda, Mera, Chamlang, Amadablang etc. It takes nearly two hours to reach there from Salpa Pokhari. There is a normal way to reach there. Shiluchho peak is also a pilgrim place where many devotees go for worship every year. There is a temple and devotees believe that they will have a child, wealth, education etc after worshiping there.

2.3 Phaplu Naulekh trekking trail

Solukhumbu Phaplu to Naulekha either through Budidada, Sotang, Bung, Chharakhar, Panchpokari or through Jubing, Kharikhola, Sibuche, Kothe has also been highly over shadowed due to the lack of dissemination of information. For this trail VDC Bung has invested some funds for improvements.

3. Strategy to develop new trekking trail :

There are many alternative strategies to develop the above mentioned trekking trail. What kinds of strategies are suitable depends on available resources: human resources, technical parties and budgets. However some applicable strategies are recommended bellow.

3.1 Stage of Survey :

In this stage the above mentioned trekking trail survey report is prepared. In this survey report there may be included the possibility of camping grounds, access to drinking water, remarkable beautiful views, lakes, mountains, pilgrim places, days to reach there as well as a budget to develop that trail. On the survey team there should be technical people in the related fields. They will prepare the report after a field visit of this area.

3.2 Fund Rising and plan implementation stage:

After surveying the trekking trail an approved report will be prepared by the technical persons in their related fields. On the basis of this report a proposal will be prepared and presented to donors, either Nepal government sectors or INGOs and NGOs in the related area and implemented for infrastructure developments. It may(also be presented to??? )District Development Committee, Village Development Committee, Finance Ministry and other sectors on behalf of Nepal government. It can be presented also to the Trekking Agent Association of Nepal (TAAN), Nepal Mountaineering Association and other related trekking companies for fund collection.

3.3 Stage of dissemination of information:

After completing the development work related to infrastructure it can be disseminated to the stockholders. F.M, Radio, Email, Internet, website etc.can be used for dissemination of information. Seminars and workshop can be organized and presented for related office agencies like Trekking Agent Association of Nepal, Nepal Mountaineering Association and other related field of members. There is also the possibility of organizing a tourist festival for dissemination.
